How to Maintain Your Granite Countertops

Your new granite countertops will look fantastic, arriving polished and sealed  from the factory. But how do you keep them looking that way?

Granite is naturally porous, meaning it must be sealed to create a barrier between the stone and potential stains. If properly maintained, acidic and harsh spills such as red wine, ketchup or mustard will easily wipe away and leave no mark.

Maintaining your granite countertop is quick and easy. All you have to do is follow these simple steps to keep it looking its very best for years to come:

1. Daily Maintenance
On the days that you’re enjoying your outdoor kitchen, remember to wipe up any spills of acidic liquids like red wine, mustard etc. as soon as possible. Removing the potential stain quickly will ensure no staining to your countertop. At the end of the day, simply use warm soapy water to wipe down your countertop and dry it with a soft cloth. Never use abrasive cleaners, or those containing bleach, as these could remove the sealer and discolor your stone. We also recommend using a cutting board and never cutting directly on the surface to protect your countertop.

2. Monthly Maintenance
Once a month, we recommend that you thoroughly clean your countertops, using warm water and mild dish soap. A soft dish sponge can be used to remove stubborn dried-on food residue. Then, dry the tops completely with a soft, clean towel.

3. Semi-Annual Maintenance.
To keep your natural stone tops looking their best and to protect them from the elements, you should clean and reseal them every six months. First, thoroughly clean your countertops, using warm water and mild dish soap. A soft dish sponge can be used to remove stubborn dried-on food residue. Then, dry the tops completely with a soft, clean towel. Once the tops are completely dry, you can reapply the granite sealer. Follow the instructions on the bottle and allow the sealer to cure for a minimum of 24 hours before using the countertop.

When exposed to direct sunlight and the elements for extended periods, granite will naturally ‘weather’ and colors may change slightly. To reduce the effects of the elements, and in addition to the above maintenance, we recommend covering your outdoor kitchen with a waterproof cover when not in use. Alternatively, positioning your outdoor kitchen under a pergola or gazebo is a great way to protect your investment.
